About the Workshop
The Space Mechanisms workshop 2021 on “Position Sensors” will take place via Webex on the 5th of February 2021 .
Position sensors are required in space mechanisms in order to check or control the position of the mechanism moving parts. Position sensors are used also as means to inform about the achievement of a function or a position (e.g. end of travel or reference position sensors).
As an important space mechanisms’ building block, position sensors can have a significant impact on the performance, functionality, and reliability of the mechanisms.
The workshop aims at identifying the existing position sensors technologies (compatible or suitable for space application) with their associated main advantages & drawbacks and the near future needs of European industry such that a roadmap of R&D activities can be defined.
The goals of the workshop are:
- To provide an overview of the existing and on-going developments of position sensors that could be suitable for space applications.
- To identify potential needs for improvements for existing and future missions, such as reliability, cost, interfaces, electronics, etc.
- Identify new trends in mechanisms position sensors utilisation and applications (e.g. embedded sensors, COTS, etc)
- Identify a Roadmap of R&D activities to cover the needs of European industry
- Promote exchange between suppliers and costumers
Representatives of the European space mechanisms community and position sensors suppliers are encouraged to participate to the Workshop.

Komputery Astro Pi to małe urządzenia komputerowe zdolne do wielkich rzeczy. ESA współpracuje z Raspberry Pi Foundation w celu przeprowadzenia projektu edukacyjnego, który wykorzystuje dwa komputery Astro Pi umieszczone na ISS za pomocą kodowania i eksperymentów naukowych. Podczas tej sesji zostaniesz wprowadzony do oprogramowania i sprzętu Astro Pi, w tym zestawu czujników. Skonfigurujesz i nauczysz się programować Astro Pi w języku, w którym się komunikują – Python. Te specjalne komputery mogą na przykład służyć do komunikowania się z astronautami na pokładzie ISS poprzez manipulowanie tekstem i obrazami na ekranie LED, a także do przeprowadzania eksperymentów naukowych.

Talal Al Kaissi is the Vice President of Special Projects and the Space Program of G42, where his role is to support the various business verticals with special projects, as well as lead the development of a space vertical within G42 inclusive of an investment thesis, products and offerings that can leverage the robust AI and cloud computing capabilities G42 has, as well as provide support to the UAE national space program’s ambition to develop a commercial space ecosystem.
After 2 years at the UAE Space Agency as an Advisor to the Director General on Strategic Projects, Talal joined G42 in September 2020. Prior to his role at the Agency, Talal served at the UAE Embassy in Washington DC for 9 years as a Senior Advisor for Commercial Affairs at the UAE Trade & Commercial Office and also led the US / UAE Space Affairs.

The ESA Mechanisms Section hosts the annual Space Mechanisms Final Presentation Days to disseminate the results of research and development activities to interested parties from the ESA member states.
The Space Mechanisms Final Presentation Days represent an opportunity to gain a complete overview of recently completed activities, and the possibility to discuss and share views on R&D directions, strategies, technologies and investments with colleagues from the space mechanisms community.
The Space Mechanisms Final Presentation Days are an opportunity for attendees to increase their professional network and to stay informed of the latest mechanism technologies developments.
The Final Presentation Days 2021 will take place as an online event based on the ‘’Let’s Get Digital‘’ platform. In addition to the presentations themselves, the online event will offer a platform for networking and virtual exhibition of stands and/or corporate videos.
